  • 8.25.2011 Practice all by myself, mostly shadow Uchikomis, lots of movement, strength exercises.

  • 5.24.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, circuit training with 14 reps in under 5 mins, tons of Uchikomi with Osoto Gari, line throws on soft mats, then some conditioning with pushups, leg raises, and more.
  • 5.17.2011 Full warmup, circuit training with 12 reps in 4:30, a few hundred Uchikomi with Sasae and Harai Goshi. Ended with line throws with favorite techniques on to soft mats. First practice at new dojo location. Low ceiling looks like a problem as I nearly hit my feet during a throw from JT.
  • 5.12.2011 Full warmup, followed by numerous rounds of 30 second Ne Waza Randori starting in a Kesa Gatame hold. Each person held every other person (6 of us), then was held by each of the 6. Great practice on improving our timing and technique. Tomorrow night I'll help with our move to the new dojo location further down Soquel Avenue.
  • 5.10.2011 Full warmup, then Sensei Richard explained various techniques we practiced including Hiza Guruma, turtle turnover by walking Tori to back corner. Ended with a few 1 minute Tachi Waza Randori efforts with different partners.
  • 5.3.2011 Back after a week long business trip, good to see Sensei back from India. Full warmup and supplementals, lots of Uchikomis, Sensei Richard came to visit and helped with pointers on various throws, ended with a set of 12 reps in one circuit training effort.

  • 4.19.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, lots of Uchikomis standing, then moving, and finally some 3 person with full power.
  • 4.14.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, but quad is still bruised and sore. Lots of Uchikomis, then Ne Waza transitions, and a bit of Ne Waza Randori. Ended with some conditioning and some dodgeball for Dominic and Max.
  • 4.12.2011 Back after a week long road trip. Full warmup and supplementals, practiced turnovers, then a little Ne Waza randori. Took a beating today as Dominic kneed me in the groin, then Caleb heeled my in the quad a little while later. Ended with a few conditioning exercises.
  • 3.31.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, then lots of Uchikomis. Ended with some easy Ne Waza transitions and stretching.
  • 3.29.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, then Chris led a number of conditioning exercises based around pullups. chinups, burpees, pushups, and situps. Lots of Uchikomis with Max, he was a good sport to work hard with me. Ended with a few more conditioning efforts.
  • 3.24.2011 Quick warmup and quick supplementals, easy Ne Waza holds, escapes, and turnovers to finish warming up. A number of rounds of Ne Waza randori with Ian.
  • 3.22.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, then easy Ne Waza holds, escapes, and turnovers. Worked on sets of Uchikomi with Joe and Chris, and ended with a set of circuit training. Today was the first practice without Sensei, as he will be back in India for the next month.
  • 3.17.2011 Full warmup followed by review of all the basics including Ukemis, Kuzushi, and Tai Sabaki. Learned Uki Otoshi for the first time and discovered we all need to work on our Mae Mawari. Practiced lots of these including using the trampoline, which was lots of fun!
  • 3.15.2011 Full warmup and supplementals, numerous Uchikomi for all the major throws with 10 right and 10 left. Worked on a few combination techniques including front throw switch to Tani Otoshi. Ended with a few conditioning exercises with Chris as a partner.

Some 5 minute Ne Waza randori with JT and Ian at partial strength to clear the lungs out. Ended with some conditioning including neck bridges front and back, and normal bridges.
  • 2.24.2011 Led full warmup, then practiced Ne Waza transitions then turnovers. Followed with numerous 30 second Ne Waza efforts rotating through many partners. Ended with easy Ne Waza practice on the areas everyone needed improvement on. I need to develop more feel and redirection of Uke's power rather than responding with my own power. Learned a nice escape from Kami Shiho Gatame where you bring the arm across Uke's neck and my own chest.
  • 2.22.2011 Led full warmup and supplementals. Free movement Uchikomi combinations including Ippon Seoi Nage when Uke is stiff arming by pressing back with shoulder and slipping Uke's arm up while turning. Next was Kouchi Gari, then Ouchi Gari, and Ippon Seoi Nage last. This causes Uke to relax upper body due to attack on legs, and permits Tori to get in closer with each movement. Ended with Randori, but I helped new students with Ukemis.
  • 2.17.2011 Sensei was at an Aptos wrestling meet, so I led the small class today for Ian, Jay, and Jenna. We did full warmups and full supplementals, followed by numerous Uchikomis. Worked on some 3-person rotation with full power. Practiced our Ne Waza hold transitions and then turnovers. Ian and Jay worked on easy Randori with no throws to help Jay in his upcoming tournament on Sunday at San Jose Buddhist.
  • 2.16.2010 Practice with Gabe doing lots of Uchikomis, then easy Randori without throws to develop our instincts.
  • 2.15.2011 JT led class as Sensei was busy with a wrestling meet. Full warmup and supplementals, then lots of Uchikomis. JT left and I led the last half of the class. Practiced speed Uchikomis and moving Uchikomis. Finished with conditioning exercises.
  • 2.10.2011 Led warmup, then formed a circle and practiced throwing right and left side on each person in turn. Throws included Ippon Seoi Nage, O Goshi, Osoto Gari and combination with Sasae. Good practice as everyone needed more experience with being thrown on each side repeatedly. Did a few rounds of Randori, but got my shin kicked pretty bad and hobbled around for the final few matches. Received my USJF Life Membership card and paraphernalia.
  • 2.8.2011 Warmup and supplementals, then worked on sweeping skills by ourselves then moving with a partner. Moved on to standing and moving Uchikomis for Harai Goshi with JT. Next was 30 second holds for Kesa Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, and Kata Shiho Gatame. Ended with some conditioning exercises. Was feeling stiff and weak today for some reason.
  • 2.3.2011 Quick warmup, then 2 sets of circuit training of 12 reps with Chris, felt good for both. Moved on to Ne Waza turnovers with Chris, followed by 3 person Uchikomis with Chris and Sensei. Next was moving Uchikomi combinations with Chris, but my leg was feeling better till I bumped it again during Uchikomi, ouch. Ended with Randori, though my leg was hurting and skipped it. Gabe went with Jay and had a bad fall and banged the back of his head. Says he blacked out for a few seconds. Let's head to Erick's Deli and relax.
  • 2.1.2011 Warmup, then easy Ne Waza holds and turnovers with Tim. Moved on to Randori with some of the lower belts, rounds with Jay, Gabe, and wrestling efforts with Tim. Fairly easy day, but managed to get kicked in the calf and it's gonna be quite the bruise tomorrow.
  • 1.27.2011 Full warmup, easy Ne Waza turnover practice with Ian, Ouchi Gari/Ippon Seoi Nage combinations with Chris, easy Randori with Chris and Ian, ended with some conditioning with burpees, Ippon Seoi Nage shadows, and something else I can't recall.
  • 1.26.2011 Quick warmup, light Uchikomi practice with Sensei for Sasae, Osoto Gari, Ouchi Gari, Ippon Seoi Nage, and finally combination Ouchi Gari to Ippon Seoi Nage. Gabe and Shelby mirrored the same efforts.
  • 1.25.2011 Led today's warmup, then moved to Ne Waza transitions with JT and Adam. Followed with lots of moving Uchikomis with Eric for Harai Goshi, Osoto Gari, Ouchi Gari with and without leg lock. Ended with conditioning exercises including pushups, various crunches, then leg switch/stretching efforts. Need to work on pushup and crunches to get stronger. One handed pushups were ridiculous.
  • 1.20.2011 Full warmup then worked on 25% Ne Waza Uchikomis with Chris. Of course with the two of us, things were a little more effort than that. Moved on to Ne Waza Randori with Ian, Sensei, JT, and Eric. Used a huge amount of energy and got worn out too quickly. A great tough workout, but I need to do 30 minute Randori efforts more regularly to get strong. I suspect that's what Sensei has in mind. Ended with conditioning efforts (pushups, situps, reverse situps, and leg switches), but I was way too tired to do them well.
  • 1.18.2011 Full warmup, then worked with Sensei Richard from NPS on Kosoto Gake. Focused on correct lifting of the leg with side motion, counter to Osoto Gari, control of sleeve after throw and follow up into Ne Waza holds where sleeve arm is crossed over Uke's body. Always entertaining to have Sensei Richard share his experience and wit. Ended with some conditioning with Sensei focused on Uchi Mata leg sweeping exercises.
  • 1.13.2011 Full warmup then easy Ne Waza holds and escapes with Chris. Moved on to cover additional moves to turn opponent while they are in a defensive position. Repeated everything many times to train the body to feel the moves. Practiced 5 throws/falls with Ippon Seoi Nage in rotation with Chris and Eric. Ended with tons of conditioning exercises including scissors, leg circles, bridges, leg switches, and more. Good hard effort on techniques and strength.
  • 1.12.2011 Easy practice with just Sensei and I. Worked on various Ne Waza holds and escapes just practices forms. Focus on avoiding movement when doing a hold, and only making small single movements when opponent moves into a better position. Building feel for spotting when opponent creates an opportunity for better hold or escape. Hamstrings were still tight, so ground work helped.
  • 1.11.2011 Nice to be back after the long break, jazzed about another great year ahead for Judo. Full warmup and supplementals, then we did lots of repeats of moving Uchikomis first shadowed then with a partner. Started with sweeps, then Ippon Seoi Nage (deep squats), and finally Osoto Gari. My hamstring started to tighten up and had to take it easy towards the end. Too many weeks without working out due to 2+ weeks of being sick! Let's see how I feel tomorrow. Ended with stretches, situps, pushups, and reverse situps.

2010

  • 12.23.2010 Quick warmup, reviewed techniques to practice over the holidays as practice will start again on Jan 11. Worked on escapes from Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, and Yoko Shiho Gatame. Learned take down and reverse with leg switching when opponent is in defensive posture. Pull belt and back of collar, drive hip in and wedge leg against thigh, kick opposing leg high and leg switch to roll him onto his back. Lastly learned Jigoku Jime.
  • 12.15.2010 Quick warmup, Uchikomis with Sensei and David. Covered Sasae, and Ippon Seoi Nage. Gabe skipped practice today.

  • 12.8.2010 Tons of Uchikomi practice with Gabe and Sensei. Covered Sasae, Ippon Seoi Nage, and Osoto Gari.
  • 12.7.2010 Quick warmup, full Ukemis, front throw Uchikomis with Eric that focused on using the stomach to defend against the throw. Learned a new technique Tani Otoshi as a counter after resisting a forward throw. Then learned new chokes Kata Ha Jime and Koshi Jime. Ended with a yoga lesson from Manuel.
  • 12.2.2010 Quick warmup, full Ukemis, Uchikomis for Kouchi Gari and Harai Goshi. Ended with throwing line to give people we didn't get to on Tuesday a chance.
  • 12.1.2010 Lots of Ne Waza technique practice including turning Uke from the front when in a defensive posture. Need to remember to keep close and turn outside foot, drive from the toes, and drop the knee inside the hip. Practiced half nelson turn from behind in a defensive posture while remembering to keep circling until driven to his back. Lastly practiced counter move to take Tori into guard by quickly switching hips and falling to your back.
  • 11.30.2010 Quick warmup, full supplementals, moving Ukemis, Mae Mawari crossing drills, Lots of Uchikomis for all basic throws (Ippon Seoi Nage, O Goshi, Osoto Gari, Ouchi Gari, Deashi Harai, and Kouchi Gari). Ended with throwing line and soft mat with Ippon Seoi Nage.

  • 11.11.2010 Full warmup and supplementals though I took it very easy as my calf (and knee) was still hurting. A long bike ride with Gabe earlier in the day helped my calf a ton, but I was beat. Worked with Marty teaching new people Kesa Gatame and escapes. The group ended with Ne Waza Randori starting from a hold, but just watched.
  • 11.9.2010 Quick warmup, paired with Eric for Uchikomis of favorite techniques. Moved to easy Randori with Sully and managed to smack my upper left calf muscle into his knee, and now it's killing me. Did manage to continue and work on Sasae to Ippon Seoi Nage combination that should work well for me. Ended with pushups, situps, reverse situps, and leg switches.
  • 11.4.2010 Quick warmup, paired up with Marty and did numerous Uchikomis of Sasae, Ippon Seoi Nage, Osoto Gari, and combinations. Did a couple of Ne Waza Randori efforts with Adam. Ended with partial effort Randori with Randy and a new brown belt friend of Sensei named Tony.
  • 11.2.2010 Warmup on our own, paired up and practiced Ne Waza holds and escapes followed by a few rounds of Ne Waza Randori. Practiced proper technique for bypassing full guard with JT. Ended with a few more rounds of Tachi Waza Randori.
  • 10.28.2010 Sensei Richard Riehle from NPS Judo in Monterey came for a visit for the first time. He explained lots of detail about Sasae, proper footwork, and correct Kuzushi. I have a tendency to twist Uke and should focus on lifting and pulling only. He talked about using a throw that requires the minimum movement from the moment you recognize an opportunity to throw. He discussed the right times for using Gari (reaping) throws, and his special approach to using Gake (pull/lift) throws. His Sake is especially good from either the inside or outside when Uke extends a single leg too far forward and at least slightly bent. We then did a round of circuit training, and I did 12 reps in 4:00 again. We then practiced failed forward throws that result in Tori dropping to the mat, including practice choke and sliding both hands in the gap to turn the down man from either direction.
  • 10.26.2010 Warmup on our own, circuit training with 12 reps in 4:00, paired with Chris and Jay doing favorite move Uchikomis including Sasae and Ippon Seoi Nage. Learned and practiced Uchi Mata. Ended with Randori, but I only did a light match with Jenna.
  • 10.21.2010 Warmup, circuit training first teaching Russ and James then paired with JT, we both did 12 reps in 4:15. Ne Waza practice with James on Kesa Gatame and escapes. Ended with strength exercises including swinging leg circles, bridges, and neck exercises.

  • 3.16.2010 Full stretches, supplementals, moving Ukemi, practiced Deashi Harai with Lucas and Mobin, then everyone took a turn resisting Ne Waza from a defensive position with JT and Peel. I was happy never to be turned over on my back. Learned how to turn people at the end - grab belt and lean elbow into Uke's neck, yank side arm to create gap and insert your other arm, work across Uke's back and grab other wrist, then use leverage to turn over. Peel used other technique to grab side of Uke and do a quick flip, though it requires a lot of strength. I need to focus on building strength in my week shoulder. Lots of pushups and get a rubber strength band. JT received his brown belt today.
  • 3.15.2010 Quick stretches, circuit training (10 in 4m30s) Deashi Harai, take turns holding Peel down in Ne Waza for 25 seconds, reviewed Ne Waza moves and escapes, Ne Waza exercises to strengthen our core.
  • 3.9.2010 Stretches, supplementals, practiced Deashi Harai, then a few rounds of Randori. I hurt my thumb on the first effort, besides already being sore from last night. Not a good effort, but glad for the practice. Learned how to break a lapel grip, though using it for a throw is even a better idea. Remember to control the upper body with a good grip and forearms.
  • 3.8.2010 Quick stretches and warm up, lots of Ne Waza then Tachi Waza Randori. Learned a technique for pulling back on Uke while on the mat if you're behind him. Plenty of strength in my Ne Waza, but need to work on techniques. Tachi Waza was going well, then had a fantastic moment with Ippon Seoi Nage and Peel. He came in for a throw, and I instinctively turned and threw for Ippon. I didn't think, and I could feel everything in slow motion, it was a fantastic feeling. My throat is sore and I've got a few Gi burns on my face. Cody had a good lapel grip, need to talk with Sensei on how to break it.
  • 3.3.2010 Got there early and warmed up with bridge repeats and hip throw movement with bands. Quick stretches, supplementals, moving Uchikomi for many types of throws, 2 sets of circuit training with 10 repeats in 5 minutes each. Sensei was in SF, so it was just JT and myself.
  • 3.2.2010 Stretches, supplementals, moving Ukemi. Tested for green belt with Mobin, knew most of the moves but still need work on throws like Sasae, more practice is definitely required.
  • 3.1.2010 Stretches, supplementals, Sasae Ushikomi with Aaron, Deashi Harai Ushikomi with Cody, full throw practice for Ippon Seoi Nage (very cool how you help stop the throw for the other guy), Randori with Peel/JT/Aaron, Ne Waza Randori with Sensei.
  • 2.22.2010 Quick stretches, moving Ukemi, moving O Goshi practice with Mark. Lots of Ne Waza 30 second matches with one man down. Did great escaping from Aaron and Peel, but Sensei is impossible. Peel surprised me with an escape grabbing my collar and pulling down with his leg. It was good practice experiencing it. Managed to hold Sensei down for 15 seconds or so, felt like a big accomplishment.
  • 2.18.2010 Quick stretches, circuit training for the first time, then tons of Ukemi. Great workout, would love to do this everyday followed by a whole other session covering just technique.

  • 2.11.2010 Sensei had to attend Aptos HS wrestling match, so Peel led our practice. Full stretches, supplementals, moving Ukemi. Led full Ukemi, Kuzushi, Tai Sabaki, and Deashi Harai for Jason, Cody, and another guy. Watched a little Ne Waza randori, thanks to Aaron for making me feel good after pointing out my ability to always escape his Ne Waza.
  • 2.9.2010 Out all last week in Chicago, got sick and missed Monday. Full stretches, most supplementals as I was feeling bad, moving Ukemi, taught full Ukemi and Kuzushi to new guy (Cody). Everyone else practiced Ne Waza, glad I didn't do it with my cough.
  • 1.28.2010 Full stretches, supplementals, moving Ukemi, practiced Sasae with JT and Ippon Seoi Nage with Aaron. Randori match with Mani, too defensive, he caught my feet a couple of times, remember to release when thrown.
  • 1.26.2010 Full stretches, supplementals, moving Ukemi, practiced Ippon Seoi Nage and Deashi Harai with Jason, one 3 minute randori match with Jason. Didn't get thrown, very strong effort, felt relaxed and was a bit too defensive, but used time to focus on Kuzushi opportunities though not sure how to throw him.

  • 1.21.2010 Quick stretches and moving Ukemi, Ne Waza including Yoko Shiho Gatame and Kami Shiho Gatame plus escapes. I really liked the Kami hold.
  • 1.19.2010 Full stretches and supplementals, Ne Waza including Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, and Yoko Shiho Gatame plus escapes. Ribs still sore.
  • 1.18.2010 Full stretches, supplementals, practiced Kesa Gatame and the 4 escapes (leg hook, bridge, scarf hook, and push), also saw Kata Gatame but didn't practice. My ribs are still sore so practice was hard, did lots of bridges for building strength. Sensei got his elbow hurt towards the end.
  • 1.14.2010 Full stretches, moving Ukemi, supplementals, worked on Katame Waza including Kesa Gatame and different escapes. Ribs were sore at the end.
  • 1.13.2010 Quick warmup, O Goshi, Deashi Harai, Ippon Seoi Nage, then Randori practice with JT where I worked on getting and breaking grips.

Events

A record of my Judo tournaments and clinics.

  • 1.28.2012 Dynamic Judo Clinic with Shintaro Nakano, SJSU
    • Stretching on my own, then running warmup followed by supplementals. Worked on Ne Waza techniques and escapes including Kami Shiho Gatame and Kesa Gatame. Moved on to Tachi Waza with a focus on good Kuzushi. Ran through lots of Uchikomis with various techniques. Ended with moving Uchikomis and some discussion around focus areas for tournaments like not showing weakness, always attack until the last second, make your strongest attach right away, win humbly, and lose gracefully.
  • 6.18.2011 Japanese Cultural Fair, Santa Cruz
    • Caleb didn't show and I filled in at the last minute. Kind of fun doing it all without practice. Ran through our warmup, supplementals, cross Mae Mawari Ukemis, Uchikomi, Ne Waza, Shime Waza, and some Randori. Ian and Jenna did a fantastic job on the Nage No Kata especially given they just learned it. Check out the videos in 3 parts (part 1, part 2, part 3).
  • 11.14.2010 Palo Alto Judo tournament, Palo Alto
    • Watched the action for a few hours with Monica and Gabe. Didn't participate as my left calf was still a little sore to the touch and my right knee is still a little tweaked.
  • 11.7.2010 Bojuka Judo tournament, Seaside
    • Lots of gold medals for Aptos Judo people at this smaller size tournament (Jay, Nick, Eric, etc). Sure was nice having it close by. Unfortunately I was paired with only one other person in my pool and it was JT. He threw me with Uchi Mata in the first match, I won with a Sasae in the second, and JT won again in the third with a nice sweep. Added a silver medal to my collection.
  • 10.24.2010 Judo clinic with Shintaro Nakano, San Francisco Judo Institute
    • Warmup by running around mat, forward rolls, backward rolls, cartwheels, handstand and roll, Mae Mawari rolls, then stretches. Nakano explained various moves, had us practice with a partner, then show him what we learned. We covered Ouchi Gari, proper Kuzushi and footwork, hopping and continued effort when initial Ouchi Gari fails, Kouchi Gari, and combinations. We ended with 5 two minute Randori sessions. Beautiful dojo and SFJI were great hosts.
  • 8.22.2010 Judo clinic with Marti Malloy, Silicon Valley Judo
    • Warmup, a little moving Uchikomi, then Marti began the clinic. She showed us progressive grip maneuvers that resulted in her favorite grip holding left sleeve with high right grip behind neck. Use lefthand stance to get Uke to offer his sleeve, plus breaking moves to control the left arm. Once you have the grip, she likes Sode Tsurikomi Goshi. Practiced all my moves with Steven, and we both taught ourselves Sode, really fun! If Uke resists Sode, you can then step in and do Kouchi Gari. We then moved to Ne Waza following Uke's fall from Kouchi. It was a complicated move that required turning Uke over on top of yourself, then sliding them over to the other side, locking the arm, and moving to a hold. A fun day, and the SV Judo people are always such a nice group of people.
  • 6.19.2010 Japanese Cultural Fair, Santa Cruz
    • Practiced one last time in Aptos before heading over to the festival, but not before I got my green belt! Great turn out from Aptos Judo members and people from the festival attending our demonstration. Ran through our warmup, supplementals, moving Ukemi, Uchikomi, Ne Waza, Shime Waza, and some Randori. Sensei and JT did a great job on the Nage No Kata. The demonstration was a great success, hope to see some new faces at Judo practice sometime soon.
  • 6.12.2010 Mike Swain Judo/MMA clinic, Farley's Kickboxing
    • Mike brought a SJSU Olympian hopeful named David to help him. David warmed us up with running, footwork, rolls, etc. Mike stepped us through progressive moves and combinations. Covered Ouchi Gari, Osoto Gari, Tai Otoshi, and Ippon Seoi Nage. Stressed good Kuzushi and the need to repeat 500 times a day for a year to get the hang of it. Partnered with Reggie during the clinic. Mike was a great guy and it was a great clinic.
  • 6.6.2010 Santa Clara P.A.L. Open Judo Tournament, Santa Clara High School
    • Worked at the officials table with Sensei and Peel. Learned a lot about using the timing computer, scoring computer, pool forms, and keeping the flow of contestants going smoothly.
  • 5.16.2010 Nakano Seoi Nage Clinic, Silicon Valley Judo
    • Great to visit SV Judo for the first time with Sensei, Peel, and Charlotte, though Peel was hurt and couldn't participate. Loads of people, great dojo, fun having Sensei as my partner. Stretches, running, rolls, then we repeated demonstrations by Nakano followed by practice with partner. We covered Seoi Nage, proper Kuzushi and footwork, combinations with Kouchi Gari, Ouchi Gari, Deashi Harai, reverse Seoi Nage, and more.
  • 4.25.2010 CCSF Invitational Tournament, City College of San Francisco
    • JT and Peel tied for 2nd place, I got 3rd place. First match (video) I went down on my knees and he put me in a choke and I submitted. The second match (video) went most of the way, but when I rolled with a throw, the ref called it an Ippon, though I went right to a hold and expected things to continue. My third match (video) I won with a quick Ippon using Sasae. Got my first tournament medal for third place (bronze) (video)!
  • 2.14.2010 San Jose Buddhist Invitational, San Jose State University Event Center
    • Got to watch my first tournament with Nick. Peel/Gold (4 Ippons), JT/Silver (3 Ippons), Aaron won a match, Dominic2 got 3rd place.
