Road Trip: Solvang

Monday, December 26th, 2011

My family has departed on a biking road trip adventure where my mother and I explore and hike while my brother and father ride their bikes. Our first stop is in Solvang, California just an hour past San Luis Obispo.

This quaint little danish town is full of a tourist’s delights with adorable shops, beautiful architecture, and amusing things all over town. We began with a short stop at an OStrich and Emu farm which sadly was closed. We were able to sneak a couple of shots from the highway.

After our brief moment at the ostrich farm we headed to the mission outside of Solvang called, Old Mission Santa Ines. The view over the valley was very nice and we had a lot of fun exploring the interior and exterior gardens surrounding the Mission.

Solvang itself is really cute with criss crossing streets covered in adorable stores built with Danish architecture.

Next stop was a short hike to Nojoqui Falls. We drove down a really enchanting road with giant trees dripping with spanish moss.

The Mission

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I love visiting missions, there is always something magical about them. The feeling of history. Knowing that this place held so much meaning to so many people. There is always a hint of sadness, an emptiness that surrounds them. I have posted some photos of other missions like Mission San Miguel and Mission Hallways. This mission in San Juan Bautista is one of my favorites. Not just because it has a red door… but because I went there as a kid. It was the first mission I ever went to and I still loving going there.

Roosters…

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Here is a little known fact about me, I am actually very afraid of roosters. Not chickens.. just roosters. They are beautiful creatures but very nasty. I really enjoy looking at them but I know not to get to close to them because they are very territorial and won’t hesitate in showing you how they feel. There is just something very threatening about the way a rooster looks at you. Especially  ones like I was taking pictures of in San Juan Batista. They were everywhere, it felt kind of like a cult of chickens, it was slightly frightening. They were all over the place, even on the mission. All watching me, getting ready to attack.

I am not sure why they scare me so much, I guess scared isn’t the right word, I am extremely wary of roosters. I feel like you can’t trust them. They seem deceptive because at first you go in thinking, Oh look at that pretty chicken!

No, sorry not a pretty chicken a mean rooster with big claws. So I stay my distance and mind my own business. Oh, and of course, why did the chicken cross the road? To join the cult of chickens on the other side to attack an innocent girl. Enough said.

I love old decrepit buildings, especially significant ruins like this old mission near Cal Poly, Mission San Miguel. Someday I hope to explore other ruins like in Pompeii or Rome. Some day. Hey a girl’s got to have dreams.
