Today’s adventure is a trip to the Gratiot River. This is another great agate beach that keeps everyone busy looking for the next great find. Lunch is a nice medley of the usual campfire favorites. While the kids enjoy some fun surf. We head home via Eagle River and make a stop at the Sands Hill lighthouse. Then it’s an ice cream stop in Phoenix. ...

Guns, boats, and fire make for a big day

We’ve got a big day ahead of us today. First on the agenda is some shooting up in the woods. Lindsey definitely takes the prize for best Beatrix Kiddo look alike. Then it’s a boat trip over to the Dreamland for some eats. George tries out a sepia shot for fun. On the trip back we run into a tired Karen in her kayak and give her a tow. She’s putting a lot of trust in Joe driving the boat. ...

Another boat trip to Lake Superior before a storm hits

A boat trip to the sandstone cliffs is always a treat. We’ve done lots of these trips this year, and it’s easy to see why. George caught a great shot of lightning striking on the other side of Portage. Nicely done.

Salmon fishing in Lake Superior

Today Gordon is taking George and me out on Lake Superior to work on our salmon trolling technique. Captain Dave takes the helm while Gordon rigs up some poles. The run down to the south Portage entry starts a big foggy, but clears quickly. No luck with the fish on today’s trip, though it was a good learning experience.

A typical day in Bootjack

George and his family just joined us up north. Now Gabe, Doug, and Zach make it a boy trio, and Monica, Lindsey, and Caroline have got the girl power going on. Happiness all around. Uncle George means lots of tubing around the lake. You really need to hold on tight, because George is working hard to get you to fly off. Of course there’s always plenty of peaceful activities up in Bootjack. There’s also nothing like a bit of fishing while the sun goes down. ...

Boat trip to Lake Superior

Instead of driving to our next destination, it’s time to take a boat trip. We head for the south entry and get a glimpse of the Keewenaw Star heading back to Houghton. The water of Lake Superior is so clear and the cliffs are spectacular. It’s a bit cold, but lots of fun for swimming.
