Meanwhile Charlotte and Monica get to enjoy the ostriches just outside of town.

explore and hike while my brother and father ride their bikes. Our first stop
is in Solvang, California just an hour past San Luis Obispo.

This quaint little danish town is full of a tourist’s delights with adorable
shops, beautiful architecture, and amusing things all over town. We began with
a short stop at an OStrich and Emu farm which sadly was closed. We were able
to sneak a couple of shots from the highway.

Christmas dinner at the Peysers

Val and Kim’s house is bustling with family tonight, and I like it! Like a mothers soft whisper in her infants ear
Telling her of things not yet unfurled
But waiting on the distant horizon
Like a run away balloon
Swept into the abyss
that is not cold, dark or lonely
but quiet and filled with the warmth
of a contented heart that beats
not because it has to but because it wants to

Dancing in pirouettes on the shoulders of the leaves
Rattling the bones the edifice of this green breeze
Until just one person stops to watch and listen
To the secrets swept up by this whirlwind
As the bones are rolled to reveal the truth that lies
In the scattered remains, a world foretold
But not yet cemented
The wind is shifting in this dire breath
Switching back from foot to foot
A ballerina bowing and swaying
With the whispering wind
Dancing not because someone is watching
But to release the rhythm bounding in her mind

Grit and Gravel

The soft bare flesh of your palms
Marred along with the bony knees
That refuse to carry you along this path
Dirt and gravel dig into your skin
As you sit facing the Eastern Gate
Prostrate like a child before your relentless master
On hands and knees too weak for strength
But too strong to kneel
Defiance is your name
As you grit your teeth and grip the gravel
Between your blistered fingers
There is no blame just a silent battle
As you crash to ground
Like the rebounded toss
Of the writer’s crumpled paper
As another idea
Dies and dies again
Breathe in the ochre
Of this ground where you find yourself kneeling
Paint your face with the ochre
Of the very ground you were once told to kneel upon
Let it be your armor, your war paint
In the coming battle
Where once you had hesitation
Shaking as straw in the wind
Let this gravel be your battlefield
And your oppression become strength
We are the children of warriors
But we have yet to prove ourselves
Even as you sit with battered pride
And bleeding palms
This is just your beginning
Let this blood be the signature
That is remembered by all
You who wept for what was right
We remember your name

Update

I know it has been disappointing how little I am updating my blog but I just

blog and feeling it has started to go in a direction that I never wanted. Very
soon I am planning on starting a new and getting back to the way I wanted this
blog to be. I am going to start writing more and publishing everyday as soon
as finals is over, think of it as my New Years Resolution. So from New Years
on I will start to regularly post again. I am sorry it won’t be sooner because
I am heading into my first ever finals week at UC Berkeley but I will try to
post when I can.

Thanksgiving with the family at our house

Not much to to share about Thanksgiving this year, but we did get a nice family

are dainty and clean. Some are simply left abandoned, down a dark alleyway for

Depp and Thompson is phenomenal. components that make up the glory that is Florence

Florence: Lover’s Locks

In Florence there is a tradition called the Florence Lover’s Locks. It is said
that in Florence that if you and your true love take a lock with your names
written on it and lock it somewhere in FLorence your love will last forever.
As we explored Florence, all over the city we discovered these locks. They are
only allowed in certain sections of the city and in all other places they will
be cut down. Because of this people have had to get creative and lock them in
impossible to reach and obscure places. It was amazing to look all over the
city in random unfathomable places that had locks hanging from it like of the
bottom of a bridge or incredibly high on a wall. This romantic symbol hidden
all over the city is just one note of charm to introduce the beauty and
splendor of Florence.

Tuscany

The difference between Venice and Tuscany is dramatic. Escaping from the lovely
hurried bustle of life that is Venice for the countryside where time seems to
pleasantly crawl by. Everything moves so much slower here and make so much
more sense. The simplistic beauty in overlooking acres of vineyards and Tuscan
homes is astounding. I felt like I could breathe here, life here, and
experience beauty in its most basic form, right here.

Henleyville road race

The Henleyville road race was quite the drive, but well worth it as it was
Gabe’s last race of the season. As he rolled out for the start, I couldn’t
resist hopping on after they went by. I joined them for 2 of the 3 laps, then
dropped off to avoid interfering with the race. I did roll forward from the
back just to chat with Gabe for a few minutes right at the end. Unfortunately
Gabe was feeling strong and joined the early break, but decided to fall back
thinking they wouldn’t make it. Turns out the two other Cat 4s were in the
break and finished first and second place. Third place was worth five bucks
and a t-shirt though!

Venice: Accademia and Glass Art Show

Right on the Grand Canal is the Accademia, a magnificent ancient religious art

Hall after hall, room after room, filled with old representations of faith and
religion. It is an interesting representation of faith through the ages
through creative images. The paintings range from angelic to gruesome and
simple beauty to intricate creativity. It is sort of overwhelming the amount
of faith in one building. To think that each one of these paintings was made
by a person that was so moved by faith and so dedicated to what they believed
they had to share it with the world.

Venice: Alley Ways

One amazing thing about Venice are its alley ways. You travel through the heart
of the city by walking down twists and turns of alley ways, some lead nowhere

down a new one, and to new things.

am doing, but in reality it is the only way it can be done. There are so many
doors and windows in Venice that look so beautiful, yet are always closed. It
is this idea of beauty hidden behind closed doors in Venice that is
astounding. people come to Venice to see the sights like the Campanile and St
Mark’s Basilica, but the hidden wonders of Venice, that lie behind those
closed doors is where the really mysterious wonders lie. Here are just a few
of the beautiful windows and doors I stumbled upon during our wonders that
reminded me of this hidden splendor that I or you may never actually come to

First and foremost is the Campanile, which at my new home at UC Berkeley lies a

harder and harder to take, but then again it seems that every step these days
are now burdened with the weight of time.

The sickening dragging noise of her shuffling feet is drowned out by the hum of
an old TV. The muffled voices seem far away from her and as the commercials
end her ears yearn to hear the content, the sacred testaments the TV is slowly
spewing now. She quickens her ladened steps and sets herself down, as her own
body seems to sigh in relief. The chair welcomes her home, embracing her as it
molds to her shape. The dent she has left in over years of use. This is her
home. The shape of her body is engraved in its once lush frame, but now it
creaks as it reaches out to embrace her. She doesn’t mind, it is still her
home, her resting place, her haven and final sanctuary. Across the carpet sea
sits her pride and joy, the television set. It sags now with age, pulling down
at the corners just as her face now begins its tired descent into age. The
antennas stick out at odd angles, just as she likes it. The occasional fuzz
runs across the screen but she doesn’t mind, she takes it as a sign. The line
of static that only briefly interrupts the vivid images that jump out into her
lap. A reminder from her one and only friend that it is indeed still alive.

Venice: An Introduction

Venice truly is a fairytale place. A whole new world of wonders, where romance
is all around you and there is no escaping the beauty of this city which lives
and breathes the essence of Italy.

We arrived in Venice after our stop in Austria and had to leave our trusty car
behind because no vehicles are allowed in the actual city. From there we took
a train into Venice and had an adventure trying to locate our hotel. This city
is so alive and constantly moving that dragging your luggage up and down
stairs and canal walkways is actually quite difficult to do. Eventually we
found where we were supposed to be staying only to find that the office was
closed and the owner gone away. Luckily we begged a vendor next door to hunt
down the hotel clerk so we could actually get the key to our room. After some
serious anxiety over possibly not having a hotel, we were able to check in
safe and sound.

Catching Up

Honestly there is no excuse. some great hiking on the eastern end of the island. We’ll be taking the M.V. Sandy over
to Lookout Louise, then we’ll head along the Greenstone Ridge out to Mt Franklin for a great
view. We get a nice view of the Ranger on our way back to Rock Harbor. Check out the

back to Capitola for the winter. For most of the time though, we’ll be
enjoying the outdoors, hiking, and boating in beautiful Isle Royale National Park.
We’re headed over on the Isle Royale Queen out of Copper Harbor, and

I love heading down this
way since it feels like I’m headed to San Luis Obispo to visit Nick. It’ll be
a busy day with a long race for Gabe, and a nice long ride in the hills
nearby. Mack and Matt take off first and we’re hoping for a great placing.
Gabe is off next after rollout with Ryan. I don’t think they’ve raced together
for quite a while. Gabe is jazzed about his chances today.

Villach, Austria

After our few short days in Germany we started to make our way down towards
Italy. On the way though was Austria. We drove through miles of countryside
and finally the Alps. It was beautiful driving around the countryside of
Germany, and Austria. Here unlike the USA, towns are scattered, rather than
having a large city that fans out into countryside, it seems like hundreds of
little towns were plopped down in the middle of nowhere without purpose.

Munich

Munich, Germany was the first destination on our European trip and what a
place. On this gray rainy day, the city seemed extremely somber. Being a
Sunday, all the shops were closed and the city was extremely quite. Silence
and quietness are something that seems prevalent in Germany. The people seem
to enjoy their silence. Not in a rude or snobbish way, they just appear to be
a more silent people who keep many thoughts to themselves. As if they
contemplate each word or sentence that comes from there mouth, they seem to
keep most words inside as if to spare us if any of the words are not entirely
worth hearing; in total opposition to many people I know in the US who talk
simply so silence is never heard. It is a calm and almost serene silence but
the grey sky brings a sadness to this great city.

My Busy (Wonderful) Life

A couple of days ago my grand adventure around Europe came to a bittersweet

there we left for Venice, on the way we also stopped in Austria. We had a
magical stay in Venice and have just finally moved on to Tuscany where we are
currently staying in Chianti, a very small wine village right between Florence
and Siena. After a day trip to Florence today tomorrow we are moving on to
Siena and ending our day in Vinci, Italy.

Burlingame Criterium

Gabe is racing Elite 4 at the Burlingame Criterium
today with Mack. It’s the first big elite field criterium Gabe has signed up
for, and he’s been looking forward to it.

Gabe hung in the pack nicely for the entire race, while managing to avoid

Not much wind, but it’s a typical cool, foggy morning as Gabe and Mack get
ready to roll in the Elite 4s.

There’s a pretty cool lookout at the top of the hill, but Charlotte confirms
that yellow jackets are swarming just like the warning sign indicated. Time to
head back down the hill.

Lizard Hunting

Last year in Horseshoe Bend I found an amazing looking lizard while out hiking.
This year since we returned to the same spot I was hoping to again find a
lizard like that. To do this we began a lizard hunt. We found several
different types of lizard, the most common was this little guy with the black
banded neck.

extremely good at camouflaging himself.

New Cervelo bikes for Gabe and David

Gabe’s frame was recently cracked in a minor car accident, so it’s bad news for
my wallet, but good news for the bike racing crazy junior. He was convinced
the Specialized S-Works SL3 was the way to go, but we were both hooked on
Cervelo once we checked them out at Spokesman in
Santa Cruz. Gabe got the S3 with Roval wheels and S-Works shoes. Now that’s a

It is an
ungodly heat, but for the beauty in this sparse land, it is worth it. We woke
up really, really early in the morning to catch the sunrise and get a little
hike in before it was too hot out. So we headed over to the Mesquite Sand
Dunes to watch the sun rise over this sandy wonderland.

Utah Trip: Home!

I know this is out of order but bear with me. Today was the last day of our
road trip around the Southwest. After a week, four states, and twelve national
parks my mom and I are finally home. Reasonably, we are both very tired so
today’s story of how we went all the way from Death Valley’s 108 degree
weather, to mountains of snow in Yosemite and finally home to our lovely
little Santa Cruz. However you will have to wait one more day for the photos
and the fully story. saw last year on our road trip to Michigan and loved. The first of our most
memorable revisits was Horseshoe Bend, a colossal gooseneck near Lake Powell.

This extraordinarily impressive geological monolith is one of my favorite views
I have ever seen. Sadly the lightning was a far cry from last years and
resulted in shadowed photos. Good photos or not, this was beyond amazing and I
am really glad to go back and have another chance to see this unique
structure.

Utah Trip: Arches Take Two and More……!

Today we decided to give Arches a second try but earlier, when there are not
massive hordes of toursists all over the park. We had an extraordinary time!
We first visited the Windows were there were no people at all and had a
pleasant, but extremely fast paced hike as we took pictures of the window
arches.

Afterwards we headed over to the Delicate Arch where we were faced with a
decision. To simply use the overlook of the arch or do a hike up a sheer rock
face to stand right next to the cliff. We almost chose incorrectly and were
thinking about doing the overlook for time’s sake. However in the end the
hiker’s spirit won and we decided to make the trek to the arch. It was a
decision we will never regret.

Utah Trip: Capitol Reef, Canyon Lands, and Arches

After last nights flat tire we were left behind schedule in Escalante instead
of Moab for the night. As a result we had a lot of ground to make up tonight
and did three national parks in one day. The first was Capitol Reef, a
national park full of brightly colored cliffs, beautiful aspens, and
petroglyphs.

We saw many cool things in this park. The first was a little hidden cliff
dwelling. I am not sure whether this is ancient (I doubt it) or something
someone just decided would be cool to make but either way it was really
interesting and cool.

Utah Trip: Bryce

Bryce was the next, highly anticipated stop on our trip. I have never been
there before but my mom and dad rave about how beautiful and breathtakingly
awesome this national park is. So naturally we went, because I am a national
park spoiled brat.

We were able to experience our first real wildlife besides lizards and a few
sparse chipmunks. There were pronghorn antelope all over Bryce and they were
relatively close to the road as well.

Utah Trip: Grand Staircase Escalante Part 1

Today I started out my morning on the rim of Bryce Canyon watching the sun
slowly surmount the hoodoos and cliffs of Bryce in an amazing sunrise.

After that we headed next door to Grand Staircase Escalante National Park for
some amazing views and hikes. So we went outbacking in our lovely Outback.

Our first hike of the day was at Willis Creek Trail, this turned out to be an
amazing hike along a river that cuts through a slot like canyon. It was awe
inspiring and I have never seen anything quite like it.

Utah Trip: Grand Staircase Escalante Part 2

You thought our day was over? Nope, not even close. We then headed over to the
next part of the national park to go try and see some more slot canyons called
Peek-A-Boo Canyon and Spooky Canyon. From the top of the trail it was pretty
unassuming.

Little did we know that we had to climb far down to reach the bottom of a

Our very first
destination was the upper section of Zion National Park called the Kolob
Canyons.

Sadly the lighting was terrible so I couldn’t get great photos of the terrific
landscapes that were all around us. There were giant canyons with walls
seemingly stretching to the skies and rivers that paved roads for giants. It
was quite the sight and to enhance the experience we decided to take a hike up
Taylor Creek. A nice six mile hike along a river that eventually ends at a
double blind arch.

Utah Road Trip Day 1

Today was a driving day. With each days goal in mind we have set out again on
another road trip to try to grasp just one corner of nature’s beauty and try
to hold onto it. AS always, our beautiful country has so many wonders it is
near impossible to see them all. But that will never deter my attempts. The
following week my mother and I will be doing a road trip around all of
southern Utah, seeing national parks, hiking, running, photographing, and
having a generally awesome time together in the desert sun.

Memorial Day criterium

This year’s Memorial Day Criterium is also the NCNCA Junior State
Championships. It’s not a surprise to see Jack leading the pack in the 13-14
group. He eventually won it, but Adrien from Gabe’s SJBC team did an awesome
job staying right on his tail and eventually getting second place.

Now it’s time for the 15-16 age group to roll. Zeke, Tim, and Gabe will be
working together to help Zeke lock in his Junior Points Series (JPS) win.
Henry from Tieni Duro broke away early as he often does, but this time none of
the other teams were willing to work together to chase him down. SJBC had
their plan, Tieni Duro certainly wasn’t going to chase, and Matt from
Specialized was on his own. I’m sure it was frustrating for a number of the
riders, but big kudos to Henry for winning state.

Mt Hamilton road race

The Mt Hamilton Classic road race
is an epic ride, and Gabe has come to give it his best. It’s far and away the
longest climb he’s ever done, more like 3 of the usual mountain climbs right
in a row followed by lots more climbs on the other side of the mountain. We’ve
got the lucky hat, the magical dog, and plenty of time to warm up.

It’s a beautiful day for the climb out of San Jose, and there’s no shortage of
climbing specialists ready for action. Charlotte and I head out to Livermore
to hang out while Gabe is visiting the pain cave.

Amgen Tour of California - Paso Robles

Yesterday’s stage of the Tour of California was a blast, so Charlotte and I are
back on the road to watch the riders leave Seaside for the long ride out to
Paso Robles today. Bob Roll is here too along with plenty of bikes.

Gabe is in school, so unfortunately he’s not able to collect more autographs
for his hat. Plenty of great riders getting ready to roll from Radio Shack,
Garmin, Rabobank, and BMC. The start is so much quieter than in Livermore,
almost a bit like rolling out on a small training ride. Livermore sure did a
great job yesterday.

Amgen Tour of California - San Jose

It’s the time of year again when the biggest road cycling race in the USA comes

A death shroud veiling her from the world she is simply passing through
Transparent eyes look at nothing but the horizon of the world
With feet that drag as her invisible chains burden her steps
She moves on, deliberately, persistently with no goal in mind
She must move, she must not stop or else she will be found
You see, her shadow is chasing her but cannot find her in the dust storm
She is the lost, she is the invisible left to wander when the storm is over
Determination is her name
But what good is determination when there is no objective
Simply the will to keep going, keep moving when all has imploded around you
She knows all about failure, pain, and the bottom of the hole
The grave she has dug herself into yet seems to continually evade
She dances around death with the practicality of a mathematician
Life is a calculation to her, the only components that exist
Are her obstacles and her ability to push onward
So she finds herself walking down this road again
Chased by her shadow and the inevitably of death
But this time as it always has been Lady Luck has swept her away
In the arms of a storm that is all consuming and all knowing
Maybe Luck knows just how it feels to be out of luck
So she took pity on a poor girl down on fortune who was betrayed by her shadow
But in the end luck has nothing to do with it
Her shadow will eclipse her in the end as all are and no storm can save her then
But for now she continues her dance, her game of Cat and Mouse
With those who cannot be tricked or avoided
With bare feet she continues forward, pulling the cowl of a dust storm close
To hide her face from eyes that can see all and know all
How long she wonders, how much longer can this game continue
For even now she grows weary, even now her soul
Just as the soles of her feet grow bloodied and bruised
From a fight she knows she cannot win
Yet she continues to fight because it is simply who she is
She is determination and does not know what it means to give up
So she doesn’t

Cat's Hill Classic criterium

Gabe is racing today in the legendary Cat’s Hill Classic today.
I suppose it’s a classic having been around for 38 years, rolling over rough
pavement, and including a killer 23% grade hill. Gabe and I previewed the
course a few days ago, but now it’s time to watch the Cat 3s (including quite
a few juniors) enjoy the hill.

slightly gross bird. Similar to an ostrich but weirder. There is only one
thing I enjoy about emus, their eyes. They have such brightly colored eyes and
it is there only redeeming feature to me.

Today our President
Obama made a public announcement declaring that Osama Bin Laden, the
figure-head of Al Qaeda, has been killed by American troops in Pakistan.

This event puts us in a strange position for many reasons. The main being that
events like this allow us to sit in wonder and realize that in this very
moment that history is being made around us. Will I and thousand of others
remember this day, or will it be swept away in the tide of our memories. It is
a strange thing to be able to take a step back and realize that in this very
moment history is being formed. Not just in regards to Osama’s death but
events all over the world.

Blue Heron

Blue Herons are an animal that I see plenty of but still pique my interest like

Since it

It is really simple actually and has amazing results. You take a bunch of
eggs, hard-boiled them and let the fun begin. You roll the eggs on the counter
causing them to crack but not fall apart. With your lightly cracked egg you
add the food coloring and let it sit.

Desert Flower

Only life’s most beautiful artifacts can be found were no one would expect life

Grand Canyon. We had planned to ride our bikes
along the south rim out to Cameron, but it’s really cold and we’re both a bit
tired from yesterday. Good thing we decided on some sightseeing as I think
I’ve spotted a great red Gabe creature off in those rocks.

strange Gabriel species again. This one was giant, he dwarfed a lighthouse
that was on the edge of the beautiful lake.

Another strange and rare sighting of the Gabriel. After that we headed over to
the famous London Bridge. Yes, the real London Bridge in Lake Havasu City
Arizona. Strange right?

So apparently the original London Bridge was becoming old and ruined so they
decided to rebuild it. This left the old bridge nowhere, so they put it up for
sale. Lake Havasu City bought it, shipped it, and then rebuilt it right here
on Lake Havasu.

Spring road trip - Lake Havasu

Our road trip continues as we head out of California through Lake Havasu as our

We head back west a little bit to the town of Topock as our starting point for
today’s ride up through Oatman and on to Kingman. It’s another hot day in the
desert, and there’s plenty of good climbing ahead.

Spring Break: Mojave

For spring break I am going on an adventure in Arizona on a road trip. I am
basically doing whatever comes to our whimsy along the way. Whether it be
stopping at some old worn down houses on the side of the road, chasing animals
for photos, or seeing some Indian ruins. Today we decided to stop by Mojave
National Preserve.

Mojave is a majestic landscape filled with rocky outcroppings and valleys
filled with blond cacti. To me, Mojave is blue skies the stretch beyond the
reach of the mountains held up by the arms of the prickly cactus that dwells
below.

Spring road trip - Mojave

Monica and Gabe have a week off from school, so we’re heading south in search

Of course the roads are still pretty wet and the pavement is pretty chewed up.

Criterium. We left a gigantic storm back in Santa Cruz, and the raining
starting coming down pretty hard once the race started here also. Today’s race
is an open junior’s field, so there are quite a few very fast guys out there.
Dylan takes an early break, but is later joined by Alex. Gabe hangs in there
for most of the race, but the accelerations take their toll towards the end.
Tim did a nice job hanging in there especially considering that he raced Cat 5
first thing in the morning.

Podium at the Salinas Criterium

Gabe raced at the Central Coast Circuit race again yesterday, and we lucked out

catch the break. A few guys try to hang on his wheel, but they fall off pretty

eat your face. They are tricky animals, crazy one moment and totally zen the
next.

Farm Animals

Alpaca’s are fascinatingly ugly animals. With strange clumps of fur, jutting
teeth, and eyes that watch you warily at all times; the alpaca is a shifty

However I got away from the hustle and bustle with some friends and took a road
trip down to Cal Poly to see my brother. We went to the zoo and just hung out.
More info on that will be coming over the next couple of days. I am hoping I
will soon be back on track with posting. So here is a photo to tide you over,
a funny look into the (inappropriate) life of Meerkats. (notice the guy just
kind of chilling in the back ground watching).

Snelling road race

Charlotte and Gabe headed out to the central valley for the Snelling road race,

(https://www.nps.gov/yell) to enjoy the awesome wildlife and scenery again. I
didn’t collect a lot of photos this year, as Monica and I shared the large
lenses and she posted a lot of her work on her blog. You can read her entries
for day 1, 2, 3456.
I’ve put a few of my favorite photos here for you to enjoy. Unfortunately the
wildlife was very sparse this year, but we did manage to get some great fox
photos. We did have a load of fun, right up to the point I got a bad fever and
cough for the last few days. It was a treat to meet Chris Miller and his wife
for dinner and talk about genealogy and life in Montana.

Yellowstone: Day 6

Today was our last day in Yellowstone and I can’t lie, it was pretty
disappointing. The entire park was incredibly vacant of all life. There were
so little animals that we saw almost nothing. This includes wolves. For the
second year I am walking away from Yellowstone without a photo of a wolf. It
is disappointing but I can not forget what a wonderful experience I have been
blessed with. I got to see a fox, coyotes, eagles, buffalo, big horn sheep,
and many other things. I have had a wonderful time but I really want to see
the wolves.

Yellowstone: Day 5

Today the wildlife activity in the park seemed to pick up a lot. We saw all
sorts of animals. We started out with a small coyote who crossed the road in
front of us only to soon disappear into the snow.

We also saw some more coyotes later in the day. One of which had found what
appeared to be a large elk bone and was chewing on it for quite some time.

Yellowstone: Day 4

Outside our hotel is a group of deer that seem to hang around at all times.
This morning they were especially cute; they were all huddled up next to a
house trying to stay warm. It is a nice thing to wake up and have wildlife
basically sitting on your doorstep.

There was a lot less wind and bad weather today and even some really nice sun
that greeted us frequently throughout the day. The remnants of yesterday still
remained and the snow plows and blowers were out in full force trying to clear
away all the snow off the roads.

Yellowstone: Day 3

Today was a snow storm. There was so much snow and wind that it felt like a
snow hurricane. At certain times we couldn’t even see the road. This also
meant that we didn’t see that much wildlife. Still no sightings of wolves but
we saw plenty of other animals. There were a lot of buffaloes hanging out in
the snow, hunkering down for the storm.

We also had a couple of coyotes run across the road in front of us.

Yellowstone: Day 2

Today was the first day of our real expedition. We headed out in sub-zero
temperature in search of the wildlife and beauty that Yellowstone has to
offer. We started out early and headed into the park. We got to see some more
elk at Mammoth Hot Springs, one of which was nursing.

Then we started out on our long days journey to Lamar Valley. We saw all sorts
of animals including coyotes, bison, elk, bald eagles, and big horns. However
most of them were to far away to get actually decent photos of them. The big
horns however decided to cooperate with us and get close enough to photo graph
as they ate their lunch.

Yellowstone: Day 1

Today my dad and I arrived in Yellowstone in -20 degree weather. Yes, it was
that cold. I have never been so cold in my life, and there is probably a week
more of this weather in my future. Anyways, we headed down to Gardiner Montana
after landing in Bozeman. It is a winter wonderland here, there is snow
everywhere. As we pulled into Mammoth Hot springs it was snowing and
incredibly windy. My face still feels wind burned…

Yellowstone Take Two

As many of you know last year I spent a week in Yellowstone following wolves
and taking photos. I am blessed to yet again have this amazing opportunity to
explore the harsh wild wilderness that is the Yellowstone tundra. The next
week I will be in the Northern part of the park photographing animals and
landscape.

I haven’t been posting as often this month because I have been so busy with
preparations. After this is over I am going to go back to posting regularly.
Hopefully each day I will have time to post some of my pictures from my
adventures of that day. Last year I couldn’t because we were so busy, but
hopefully this year I can. I can’t wait to return to Yellowstone. Hopefully
this year I will get some really good wolf shots!

Dead Beauty

It is always the most interesting type of beauty that can be found within the
dead and withered objects. The things you believe are beyond the beauty of
life and have passed over into a place where only death is. Often, however, it
seems that these dead things carry their own beauty. A distinct majesty from
the living beauty that stands far a part from any normal type of beauty. It
seems there is even beauty in death. The withered and the dying, a beauty that
is not from a world we can fully understand. Instead, a beauty that awaits us
for a certain time and until then we can not fully understand this withered
and dead beauty, just what it could mean.

Dinuba Criterium

Yesterday Gabe did the Pine Flat road race, and this afternoon it’s the Dinuba
Criterium. He’ll be riding a small loop thirty times around very quiet Dinuba.
This huskie anxiously awaits the start with the rest of us.

Right away Jack from Specialized powers off the front as if today was a time
trial. One guy manages to hang on for a couple of laps before running out of
steam. Gabe is staying right on Aidan’s wheel, and the small group is working
well together.

Pine Flat road race

It’s a holiday weekend and we’re off to the central valley for some quality
bike racing. First stop is the Pine Flat road race. It was pouring rain on the
way out, but this morning it’s a fine day for racing. It’s going to be a long
course with quite a bit of climbing, but fortunately Gabe’s junior field is
pretty small. And the four of them are off up the steep short hill at the
start.

Creeper Photo: Two Worlds

There is another world at my fingertips
So solid and real yet non-existent
No matter how far you dig
The opposing hands seem
Just beyond reach
A drowning sibling
Too far for contact
With this other world
At times you see each other
In the glimpse of a shadow
Out of the corner o your eye
In the slight reflection
Of a dirty decaying mirror
Hiding in the corner
Of an old attic room
Immersed in a dark pool of water
With the shimmering image
Of this world
There one moment
But lost in the disturbances
Of the world we find ourselves in now
You wait for these fleeting meetings
Between you and your other self
Whom you never knew
Except for those evanescent glances
Into a ghostly world
Were two were almost one

The official Early Bird Criterium

Last week was the last training race, and today is the real thing. Fortunately
the field isn’t packed with the usual ringers from SJBC or Specialized, so

It’s a slower pace than previous races, and I’m happy to see Gabe hanging right
at the front of the pack the whole race. He holds a pretty decent position on
the last turn and pulls off a sixth with Ryan from Steven’s Bicycles taking
first.

Vines

It seems there are windows hidden in all sorts of places. weekend was the Castello de Amorosa. We visited this castle out in the wine
country was extraordinary.

My favorite part of the castle was not actually the structure, but the animals
around it. Especially the sheep, they cracked me up and made it feel almost

bike race called the Cherry Pie Criterium. Yes, the winners do get cherry
pies, sadly not us though. This was my first trip to wine country and because
I am not yet of drinking age we had to find some pretty awesome adventures
other than wine tasting. First plan for adventure: visiting cool looking
wineries and taking pictures of fields with flowers.

Cherry Pie Criterium

We’re off to the Cherry Pie Criterium this weekend for Gabe’s first big
official group crit. He’s pretty nervous considering he’s lumped in with the
17-18 year old group, and there are tons of advanced category riders. Looks
like Specialized, SJBC, Tieni Duro, and Team Swift are here in force. A slow
clip in doesn’t bode well.

The pack is moving very fast today and there’s one crash at the switch over

Clitter clatter of the tatters
Left behind by the shreds
Of all that never was
excited to do another one after a successful first race. It’s another big
field, but fortunately the Spokesman rabbit isn’t here today. The pack holds
together nicely for the whole race, though Gabe had to slow once for another
rider’s slight crash. He’s in great position for the last couple of laps.

The finish was easily won by one guy, then second and third by another,
followed by the fast pack. Gabe was tired, but pulled in a nice fifth place
finish. I think he’s got the fever now.

My Belongings

These are the things which belong to me:

A spider suspended in a cobweb
That lies in the corner of my room
Waiting each day to greet me
When I come home with a silent hello.

A fake flower in a waterless vase
With a single counterfeit dew drop
Balancing on the end of a synthetic leaf
Like a tear drop that will never fall.

A painting of a woman half finished
Hanging over my bed at night
My guardian angel watching over my dreams
As you place your hand on the railing
You feel the pull of ghosts at your shirttails
The whispers in your ears
The fog’s fingers gently wrapping around you
Caressing your face pulling you step by step
Onto the bridge that will take you away

You feel consumed by the fog
As it wraps you in its loving arms
Like a mother and her child
What do they have to cry about?
They are so pretty
But they won’t stay pretty for long
And it isn’t about being pretty
It is about loosing life
Where did they loose it?
I laughed softly
Resting my hand on her shoulder
I don’t know
Maybe they left it under their bed
And forgot it was there
I did that once
She said with a sad sigh
I know I said smiling
Maybe they lost it
In the playground
Hidden under a sandy Everest
I think I get it
The flowers have lost their petals
And that is why they are sad
Exactly and they cry for each others loss
Then why doesn’t it make me sad?
Different things make different people sad
I say with a frown
Watching the poppy’s tears
Roll down its face
You will understand when you are older
But I want to understand now!
I know, I say with a smile
I know as I guide her away
To happier things
To flowers with open faces
Smiling at the sun
But she will never forget
The crying flower
Knowing that every flower she sees
Will cry someday
For what it lost in the sandbox
Or under the bed
We all loose something in the end

Within Reach

A woman stands on the side of the road
Not on the side walk but not quite in the street
Standing on the gutter’s front step
She is motionless as cars streak past in a blur
They do not stop for her, they don’t even see her
As she stands on the edge of their awareness
But very much in the middle of her own mind
She watches the cars as they past
You can see her lips move but they make no noise
Maybe she is asking them to slow down
Maybe she is asking them to speed up
Or maybe she is asking for a prayer
To save her soul for what she is about to do

Baboon

Baboons are a very strange, colorful, and robust animal. They are very fun to
photograph because they have such amazing colors in the strangest of places
which I am sure I won’t have to mention because everyone is fully aware of
that already.

I really enjoyed the females the most even though the men have such interesting
looks I liked the females better. Their hair looked almost like it had been
crimped and dyed with yellow. Their eyes are the most amazing par, wide and
yellow. They were fascinating to watch.

Snowy Egret (Frostbite)

A snowy egret flies
On paper thin wings
Like a paper airplane
Gliding through the air
Keeping airborne
For as long as it can
Until its fragile wings
Bow under the weight
Of heavy air
Into the ground
Where no paper airplanes soar
Here the snow
Belongs to the land
Not the bird in the sky
No longer fragile and beautiful
But the paper-thin feel
Of cold seeping
Into your hollow bones
The delicate dance
Of frostbite on the fingertips
Of ballerina dancers
The slow decay of the biting snow
And the old heaviness weighing down
The lightest breeze
The wings of an egret
Laden with the burden
Of the world without sky
Chained to the ground
Waist deep in snow
Where a creature with wings
Does not belong
Yet cannot escape from
The paper wings beat
To leave behind this place
Heavy
With the absence of all
Freedom lies in the air
Where the snow belongs
To a graceful bird
Not the world lying below
Where frostbite is left behind
In the warm sun’s glow

The Dik-Dik

Let me introduce to you a very strange animal called a dik-dik.Yes, its name is
dik-dik. The even funnier part is what this animal actually is, a deer like
animal that is only about a two foot long. An antelope named for its shrill
call that actually sounds like “dik dik” or “zik zik”. Probably one of the
strangest animals I have ever seen, I had heard about them before but never
expected to see one in person when I went to the San Francisco Zoo. I am very
glad I got to see one, and now you can too.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree in the eye of the beholder, the eye of the adventurer. My mom and I
recently visited Joshua Tree National Park down by Palm Springs. A park full
of rock pillars and sculptures and very odd looking trees that slightly
resemble puffy cacti slapped on the ends of a scruffy looking tree trunk. Odd
but intriguing plants.

The peacock is a truly magnificent animal with dazzling colors, long majestic
feathers, and beautiful patterns. However it is actually a relatively mean
animal. There is something scary about them like they are constantly trying to
figure out the best method of attack to send you running and screaming in the
other direction. I think it is the black beady eyes always watching you even
when it seems like it isn’t.

Bird Shots

Slowly but surely through constant effort, I am getting better at getting the

we are for the first mentoring and racing session. A bit of warmup on the
rollers, and it’s off to the start of the race. It’s a good sized field, and
I’ve tried to pass on the key advice Gabe will need today. The pack wound up
getting shredded when a really fast Spokesman guy took off the front. After a
couple of laps between two packs, Gabe dropped to the second pack and finished
a strong first. Outstanding job Gabe!

Dead Man’s Light

I don’t think I like it but it is an interesting example of short poetry, which

Shadows retreat
As dawn creeps closer.
I have
learned so much in this year alone that it is astonishing to me; from
photography, to my writing, to my schooling I feel I have grown. Instead of
taking the time to look back on all the wonderful things that have happened
this year I want t o take the time to move forward. People linger far to log
in the past and as part of my growth I hope to live in the now instead of what
has happened. I want to tell everyone to take advantage of the life you are
given and don’t waste a second. Now is the time for growth, it does not matter
if you are young or old, it is the time to grow. So soak up in your roots the
wonderful memories of the past and spread out your branches with the growth of
new memories and new life.

Gabe at the San Bruno Hill Climb

Gabe’s racing season gets off to a start with the San Bruno Hill Climb. There’s
plenty of rain and cold threatening as usual, but fortunately there’s a
somewhat sunny pocket just for the race. Warming up is a trick at this race,
but we’ve got the tent and rollers that do the job nicely. It’s too bad the
long line of starting groups cools him down completely before the start. I
know Gabe is nervous with national champions and older kids in this race, but
he’ll do his best. I think he was happy with his result of 22:20.7 for the
day.

Wolf Child (Crossroads)

They say you found me
